Wold Ecology and Yorkshire Coast Nature supporting Filey Bird Observatory

Wed 21st Jan, 2015

In a time when conservation groups across the country are struggling to cope, support and grants from ethically-driven businesses can make the difference between a project succeeding or floundering at the first hurdle. Here at Filey Bird Observatory & Group (FBOG) we do our best with the resources at hand, but as a dedicated voluntary organisation we rely on the goodwill of those who choose to support our work.

Both Yorkshire Coast Nature and Wold Ecology have helped us with their skills and expertise in recent years, from putting together management plans to advising on practical conservation projects. Most recently, Yorkshire Coast Nature kindly sponsored the Filey Bird Report.

The annual report is a fundamental part of the very foundations of a Bird Observatory, detailing and recording the activities of an area's avifauna throughout the course of a year. From the breeding success of local Sand Martin colonies, to the proportion of juvenile Gannets leaving their natal home, to the annual influxes of Scandinavian thrushes, to the surges of shearwaters and skuas migrating south, and much more, the report provides a vital one-stop shop for everyone with an interest in local wildlife, from individuals to groups, local authorities and governmental departments.

It seems hard to believe now, but just a few years ago the annual Filey Bird Report was hanging on by a thread and looked all set to disappear. Thanks in no small part to the generous sponsorship of Yorkshire Coast Nature, we've been able to turn the ship around and not only save the annual report, but make it one of the very best in the country.

The 2013 report was completely revamped, redesigned and rebooted, with a larger, full-colour format, extensive sections dedicated to all kinds of other wildlife as well as birds, and various articles of interest by passionate local naturalists. It was well worth all the hard work and has been a huge success, receiving  gushing reviews from various quarters. Birding Frontiers called it 'the benchmark for other reports to aim for', while Birdguides said 'the evolution of the annual report has taken a refreshing step forward here' – praise indeed!

Here at FBOG we look forward to working closely with YCN and Wold Ecology in the future, and thank them for their continued support, which amongst other things helps us produce a professional report to be proud of.

You can supprt our work by buying a copy of the report for just £8 here and find out more about our work here.
