Filey And Flamborough Ringing And Migration Week

  • Filey and Flamborough

Birds have no physical borders to movement, no boundaries to their migration. They can fly anywhere they like. October is one of the busiest months on our island with birds of many species making their way in every direction. From those leaving western Europe, others arriving for the winter and smaller numbers of course, a wrong navigation, on a kind of evolutionary scouting mission.

Bird Observatories are specific locations around the coastline of the UK designated as migration study sites by the Bird Observatories Council.  Yorkshire is blessed with three; Spurn, Flamborough and Filey. Migweek is an annual event open to the public celebrating the amazing world of bird migration. The events are all based at our two most northern observatories Flamborough and Filey.

All events are free! Bird ringing demonstrations, guided migrant bird walks and visual migration events, sea-watching demonstrations, talks by local and national experts, merchandise sales etc. Many people are involved all giving their time for free including Richard Baines YCN Director and Mark Pearson YCN birding leading free walks during the week, see program for more details.

Yorkshire Coast Nature are sponsoring this event with limited edition T-shirts and Flamborough walking packs. All proceeds from the sale of the merchandise will go to the refugee council and Jean Thorpe Wildlife Rescue Centre.
