Nature Sounds Safari

  • North Yorkshire Forest
On the cusp of winter, the cacophony of bird call has died down and a tranquillity descends. Nature is drawing back preparing itself for the colder months ahead. Gone are the months of high wildlife activity.

Sound is present however – if you listen closely. A few migratory birds arrive in November. Resident species still sing their song – although now the urgency of mating has diminished and their call is quieter. Other wildlife are busy gathering food for winter. Sound is interspersed with silence.

It’s a fascinating time to go out for a walk. It takes deep listening to hear and identify wildlife sounds at this time of the year but the rewards are great. Immersing yourself in such stillness has a massively calming affect on our minds. But to be aware of nature’s noise requires skill.

To train our ear in readiness for the safari, we’ve included mindfulness. This discipline, focuses and calms the mind reducing our internal chatter. When we're distracted by lots of thoughts deep listening is very hard to do. Once we’re in the ‘zone’, we may notice our senses become sharper – including what we hear.
