Nightjar Safaris North York Moors National Park 2024

Join us on a safari with a difference as we go on the search for the incredible elusive 'Nightjar'This nocturnal bird is famed for its churring love call and aerobatic courtship dance. Nightjars have made the North Yorkshire’s forests their key summer stronghold in northern Britain.

The sympathetic managment of these areas creates great habitat for these birds with a combination of heath, open woodland clearings and standing dead wood offering nesting sites, singing posts, shelter and insect life to feed on.

Nightjars migrate to Britain from Africa and return thereafter rearing their chicks. They arrive in the north of England in May and leave in early September.

On these special evenings we start the walk approximately one hour before dusk. This gives us the opportunity to search for other birds such as Common CrossbillTree PipitWoodcock and European Turtle Dove. On booking you will receive information on where we will meet and details regarding the Nightjar safari.

The meeting area is usually within 10 miles of Scarborough. But the precise place may change from year to year depending on where is best to see Nightjars after they arrive in May. We will therefore let everyone know closer to the time of your booking.

Company Director And Birding/Wildlife Guide

Richard’s love of birds and wildlife started at age nine when he watched wide eyed as a charm of European Goldfinch fed on a thistle within a few feet of him in the grounds of his primary school. The next day he was busy drawing the flock in his art class./tutors/2/richard-baines-pgdip-mcieem

Pam Kelly

North York Moors National Park

Your photo was a brilliant reminder of a very special evening in the forest. Terry and I are still talking about it. Before the trip we were thinking we would be lucky to see one Nightjar and the aerial display provided by 5 nightjars was amazing! We also enjoyed the earlier walk listening to bird calls and songs and it has made us both determined to us our ears more. We are looking forward to our next trip in August and really appreciate having the opportunity to go birdwatching and listening with experts who make it very interesting and enjoyable. Best Wishes Pam and Terry Kelly
