Birdsong Workshop June 2020

Introduction

Birdsong Workshop June 2020

Introduction

The North Yorkshire Coast and Forests are blessed with ideal conditions for experiencing and learning birdsong. To really hear every note and bathe in this blissful sound you need two things; high-quality semi-natural habitats and peaceful tranquillity. In partnership with the National Trust, Yorkshire Coast Nature have designed two uniquely linked events. Two beginner’s guided walks followed by a more in-depth workshop aimed at learning new skills for beginners and the more experienced.

Birdsong Workshop

We live at a very special time in history when our marvel and love of birdsong has been enriched by science and advances in technology. This workshop combines both a walk outside in the woods and the cliffs of Ravenscar on the North Yorkshire Coast with an indoor learning session. We will be listening to different species, recording bird calls and song using sound recorders and then processing these sound files to produce spectrograms.

A spectrogram is a visual representation of a sound frequency over time. They can be beautiful things in themselves, a view into another world and an aid to help us learn new bird calls and songs. A wonderful opportunity to see a song!

The workshop includes tuition time in a friendly group learning environment led by YCN Director and Ecologist Richard Baines and National Trust rangers, opportunities to use sound recording and software technology and light refreshments.

Numbers are limited so we can keep the group relatively small to ensure a high-quality experience for everyone.

Company Director And Birding/Wildlife Guide

Richard’s love of birds and wildlife started at age nine when he watched wide eyed as a charm of European Goldfinch fed on a thistle within a few feet of him in the grounds of his primary school. The next day he was busy drawing the flock in his art class./tutors/2/richard-baines-pgdip-mcieem
