Birding Discovery Day - Autumn Black Grouse Safari 2021

  • Reeth, North Yorkshire

The northern dales are a wonderful place for birds. Distinctly different from the rest of the National Park.. The lower valleys are dominated by traditional hay meadows whilst the tops are largely heather clad. The sought after Black Grouse has its English southern stronghold here and we shall search the moors and meadows for them. Its cousin the Red Grouse is the more abundant species here and they can be regularly encountered at the roadside.

Other key species here include Dipper and Grey Wagtail which frequent the fast flowing tributaries of the River Swale. On higher ground there is always the chance of encountering a Merlin or Short -eared Owl.

In addition as it is autumn and in the height of the bird migration season we shall use our knowledge of the prevailing weather conditions to identify opportunities to witness the passage of migrating birds through the valleys of the Yorkshire Dales. This usually involves large movements of continental thrushes and finches as well as the birds of prey that follow them on their journey. Please note: transport is not provided on this day tour. All sites will be in close proximity to the meeting point to be arranged.

Meeting place: The village green in Reeth near Richmond. Full directions given on booking
