Upland Hay Meadow - Wild Flower Wander

Yorkshire Coast Nature are excited to bring you these new events celebrating the amazing colour and diversity of our home county.

Each short walk is a journey of discovery, an opportunity to explore a new landscape and its native plants. from the wild uplands to lush lowland wetlands. The walks are led by an expert guide from YCN. Our relaxed learning environment will ensure you learn a lot and have fun. These rambles are suitable for beginners and intermediate levels of knowledge.

Hay meadows are a unique part of the upland landscape, and hundreds of years of managing the fields in a particular way have shaped the plant species you will find there. Sadly modern farming methods and the pressure for land to be more productive have meant that very few wildflower rich traditional hay meadows remain.

We have a treat in store though- a visit to Chris and Maggie Barraclough’s beautiful meadows right at the top of Rosedale. Even better is that they run a fabulous tea room so we can round our afternoon off with tea and cake.

We will have two hours to explore and learn about the wildlflowers of a traditional upland hay meadow, which includes species such as Yellow rattle, Eyebright and Cat’s ear and then a further hour for refreshments and a chance to recap on the species we have seen and learn some more plant identification tips.

Total walk length- less than 1 mile. Gradual slopes and some uneven ground. Toilets at farm tea room.

Date: 9th July 2022. 1pm-4pm. Please book on the date below

Meeting Place: Rosedale, Rosedale Abbey. Meeting Place map will be sent by email after your booking
