Migration Magic on the Great White Cape
Growing up on Flamborough Head, with the lighthouse flashing in through my bedroom window, the promise of migration magic as the day dawned on those grey autumn mornings was (and remains) almost tangible. September and October anywhere on the coast means migrants; but on the Great White Cape, with its huge geographical advantage and almost magnetic pull, it's the time of year that promises so much, and always delivers.

In simple terms, it's that advantage that makes Flamborough (and other legendary birding peninsulas across the globe) so special - for the countless multitudes of birds crossing the North Sea on their autumn migration, the headland is a godsend of a pitstop, sticking miles out into the dangerous waters from the line of the Yorkshire coast.

Which is why I look forward to our Autumn Migration Birding Discovery Days so much. Even on a quiet day, with the 'wrong' winds and unfavourable conditions, there are birds on the move, and anything can happen - it's that sense of jeopardy that makes autumn coastal birding so exciting, especially at a migration Mecca like Flamborough.

But on the 'right' days - of which, happily, there are plenty per season - it can be an exhilirating, awe-inspiring experience, where the only drawback can be knowing where to look..... up into the skies, out to sea, across the fields, down into the bays and cliffside bushes... new arrivals can be anywhere and everywhere, and there's nothing quite like experiencing it.

From a personal birding perspective, it's as good as it gets; that's why I've dedicated more days than I can remember to soaking up this age-old phenomenon, and that's why I love sharing it with our clients. Our Autumn Days at Flamborough are never the same - each is genuinely unique - and with a maximum of five on the team, everyone gets to enjoy the birds (and the attention!) on offer.

We don't 'chase' around after rarer birds (unless it's close by and the team want to see something in particular), but instead holistically soak up the experience, learning and enjoying as we go. Which isn't to say we don't see rarities - our groups have an enviable track record of finding very special birds - so don't rule out being the first to find the next big one!
