May is my favorite month of the year, the newly emerging bright green leaves and the longer days are life affirming, but most of all I love listening to the songs and calls of our wonderful birdlife.
April was a month of huge contrasts in the weather from “Hull will be hotter than Istanbul today” to a return to winter temperatures at the end of the month. Despite this there were a lot of great birds and other wildlife around.
What does birdwatching, Yorkshire terriers, pumpkins, friendship across borders and the fight against illegal bird hunting have in common? They all had a special place in my heart on my journey between Yorkshire and Israel.
A noticeable movement of birds to the coast at the start of the month included a noticeable increase in Common Snipe and Jack Snipe.
If you love wildlife there is nothing better than standing silently in a British Oak woodland in spring drenched by sunshine, among a carpet of Bluebells and birdsong.
