Flowers of Moorland and Bog

Fen Bog is a unique habitat in the North York Moors; a valley mire where the peat reaches a depth of an incredible 18 metres in places. The mire sits in steep-sided moorland valley, formed at the end of the last Ice Age when glacial meltwater thundered through on its way to Lake Pickering, which we now know as the Vale of Pickering. Fen Bog is also the site of characteristic Victorian ambition- in the 1830’s a railway was built over the bog, with tree trunks and sheep’s fleeces being used to float the track on the bog’s surface. The line is still in use as a heritage line, and so we may see a steam train or two during our visit!

The hydrology of Fen Bog is very unusual, and has led to the mire being home to both acid-loving plants and those that require an alkaline substrate. Because of this, the floral diversity of the site is incredibly rich, and in turn so is the range of wildlife that uses it. On our day exploring, we will see many interesting, and sometimes quirky plant species, such as Round-leaved sundew, Lousewort, Cotton grass, Butterwort and Bog Myrtle. We will also take a look at some of the more elusive plants, such as the sedges and sphagnum mosses.  The site will also be alive with invertebrates and we should be able to spot a number of butterflies including the small pearl-bordered fritillary.
