Flowers of a Yorkshire Dales Hill Farm
The iconic Yorkshire Dales are famous for their dramatic valleys criss-crossed with drystone walls, flower-filled hay meadows and picturesque field barns. The limestone rock which gives the landscape its unique appearance also creates the perfect conditions for wild plants; calcareous grasslands contain some of the most diverse plant communities. We will be looking out for Devil’s-bit Scabious, Harebell, Heath Milkwort, Eyebright, Limestone Bedstraw and the spectacular Musk Thistle as well as learning how to identify a range of sedges amongst the wet flush habitats.
Many of these plant communities survive relatively unscathed by modern agriculture in the Yorkshire Dales thanks to the difficult terrain and traditional farming methods, although sadly there are far fewer hay meadows and flower-filled pastures than there would have been in the past.
On this walk we will be hosted by Sue and Raymond at Kexwith Farm. We are kindly being allowed to explore this beautiful hidden dale which has retained the traditional farming methods so important to the preservation of upland limestone grassland.
