Wildlife Sightings North And East Yorkshire - August 2018

After a warm start to the month with a feel of mid-summer to a real feel of autumn by the end. Songbird migration got off to a flyer as Pied Flycatchers arrived in force, waders took all the mid-month headlines but the end of the month was dominated by seabirds, whales and continental songbirds.

Wow what a week for Whales! This is our fourth year leading seabird and whale trips with Sean Baxter and his family in Staithes on the North Yorkshire coast. The three sailings this week have been three of the best.

July 2018 was a wonderful month for rare and unusual wildlife sightings in East and North Yorkshire. From rare American birds to big numbers of migrant moths many species surged north during the warm weather

What To Look Out For - August 2018

Looking closely at butterflies on Buddleia can bring a rare reward. On the 25th August 2006 at Flamborough, the late Martin Garner and I caught sight of a larger butterfly flying across my garden. It rested on a wooden post and that’s when I realised it was a rare Camberwell Beauty!

June started as May ended with a good selection of overshooting scarce and rare birds. A male Rustic Bunting was the pick of a great bunch of birds at Spurn on the 1st alongside Golden Oriole, three Red-backed Shrike, Marsh Warbler and two Common Rosefinches.
